RSSB medical relief society spends over $14 million on fancy house in India, seemingly for the guru’s use

It bothers me when a religious organization that claims to be about spiritual advancement and helping others spends large sums of money on maintaining the lavish lifestyle of the organization’s leader.

It bothers me even more when the organization is Radha Soami Satsang Beas (RSSB), which is headquartered in India and led by a guru.

Well, actually two gurus at the moment, one of whom is Gurinder Singh Dhillon, who has held that post since 1990. That was when the RSSB guru who initiated me, Charan Singh, died. Charan was truly humble and unassuming. Gurinder is very different, having taken RSSB in a much different direction that goes against what I was taught during the 35 years I was an active member of RSSB (1970 to 2005).

Here’s an example, among many. Recently someone sent me a link to a story in India’s The Tribune publication. I couldn’t access the story, so the person sent me a photo of it, as shown below.

The story is about the purchase for 125 crore rupees of the most expensive residential property ever sold in Chandigarh, India. When I Googled “125 crore rupees in dollars,” I learned that the purchase price was $14,087,700 at today’s exchange rate. And the story says that the actual price could be 15-20% higher than the reported price, which would bring it to about $16,200,000 – $16,900,000.

That’s a heck of lot of money for a house in the United States. For India, I’m pretty sure it is a hell of a lot of money.

The story is rather difficult to read from the photo. So below the photo I’ve transcribed portions of the story that relate most closely to the house’s sale to the Maharaj Jagat Singh Medical Relief Society, which is run by RSSB. Jagat Singh was the guru who preceded Charan Singh. The photo of the person in the story is Gurinder Singh Dhillon, the senior RSSB guru.

Chandigarh’s property market has entered a new orbit. A luxury bungalow in Sector 9-A has rewritten the city’s real estate history, fielding an unprecedented Rs 125 crore in a registered sales deed dated August 1, 2025.

Spread over a sprawling 4,247 square yards, the property was purchased by the Maharaj Jagat Singh Medical Relief Society (MJMRS) through its representative Kanu Priya with correspondence address at Dera Baba Jaimal Singh, Beas, Amritsar district.

This is now the costliest registered property deal in Chandigarh’s history, leaving behind earlier records of Rs 61 crore in 2024 and Rs 45 crore in 2023.

…The bungalow, with its plot size of 4,247 square yards is among the largest in Chandigarh’s residential inventory. Experts say such big-ticket deals are rare, and every time one is registered, it resets the market valuation across sectors.

Market watchers believe that the actual price paid could have been even higher, as under-reporting remains common practice to save on steep stamp duty. “Registered values often understate the real consideration by 15-20 per cent,” said a Chandigarh-based property consultant, Mukesh Anarad.

This record-breaking deal proves that Chandigarh’s top sectors remain a magnet for India’s wealthiest families.

When I read this story, it seemed extremely unlikely that a medical relief society would need to spend over $14 million for a residential property. So I asked the person who sent me the story if they had any idea what this very expensive house would be used for. I got this reply:

Most probably for personal use of God man [Gurinder Singh] other wise no need for Medical Relief Society to have palatial building in prime sector of State capital. It’s the highest bid ever registered in real estate of Chandigarh.

Medical Relief Society is running 3 hospitals in rural areas so what’s the purpose of palatial house in State capital and that took with such a cost.
Poor blind devotees money being used like free helicopters and aeroplanes.
Baba [Gurinder Singh]  is having palatial bungalows in all major centres – Jammu, Rudarpur, Dalhousie hill station, Nainital hills , Amritsar and so on in India where he spends a night or two in a year during Satsang programs but being maintained by sewadars [volunteers] free of cost round the year regularly out of their blind devotion and brain washed immaturity.
This is not at all how the RSSB guru behaved during the 20 years I was a member when Charan Singh was the guru. Gurinder Singh loves to live a rich man’s lifestyle, because he has become extremely rich himself after becoming the RSSB guru (possibly through fraudulent means). I find it disgusting that the Maharaj Jagat Singh Medical Relief Society spent over $14 million for a house that seems to be for the RSSB guru’s occasional personal use, money that should have been used to help people in need. The Maharaj Jagat Singh Medical Relief Society’s web page sure doesn’t say that it spends its money on buying super-expensive houses for the RSSB guru’s personal use. In no way does that sound charitable to me.

What we attend to influences or own internal state. If we are looking for peace of mind, what purpose is there in making judgments of anyone else? If we are trying to become true observers, free of reaction, free to enjoy that freedom, then any negative reaction is going to become a new chain on our psyche. So, why chain ourselves with any notion, any information we don’t have to? I would humbly suggest this works against our efforts to withdraw from those burdens and rise free above them. To enjoy our natural state as beings who can indeed observe free of any mental burdens at all. In fact it is a discipline we must aquire in stages to basically live as we wish free of any attempt by anyone else to trigger emotions with incomplete information and innuendo.

Is serves no purpose other than to disrupt our peace of mind and all the work that goes into building that every day.

There are legitimate calls to actin around real issues what’re we can help. But these rarely have to do with any personality at all. When we see public figures making gossip from a piece of partial information I think we do best to accept it for what it is, unusable, and reject any reactivity at all. What is worthy of our attention are things we can act upon, ideally for our own betterment and that if those around us. Nothing should interfere in that.

Very helpful response for one seeking peace of mind and release of the righteous judgment that can take hold when we perceive injustice and wrongdoing.
Thank you Spence for illuminating this stubborn pitfall.

Wow , God’s own words. Nobody cares. So why must Nobody do the exact same thing he’s railing against? Nobody must really be somebody and is gonna to set the record straight. At least Brian is informative which is more than I can say for Nobody. What a dichotomy. Assholes galore.

There are many pitfalls in the life of true service. One of these is righteous indignation which is just six syllables to say whiny complainer

Complaining never solved any problem and did worse. It convinced the complainer they had actually done something when they did nothing, or worse still, just distracted those actually doing helpful things.

Our society loves to solve problems with both complaint and violence. But to build is entirely different.

Thanks for this info Brian. I too received Nam by the grace of Charan Singh. I think it matters to keep up to speed with GSD’s contortions. Occasionally I attend the Sant Mat group meetings. In my experience the Spiritual Energy that I recall from when Charan Singh was alive, is present at the meetings. I think this line of gurus ended with Charan Singh. The fact is, that there is no security in this world. For me, attending to meditation keeps me sane.

Brian, you asked for the address to contact GSD. Here is the mailing contact info: The Secretary Radha Soami Satsang Beas Dera Baba Jaimal Singh District Amritsar Beas, Punjab 143 204, India.

Yes, it seems best to write BabaJi a letter about this topic to this address, and perhaps print the reply here. Letters seem to get answered rather quickly (from anecdotal personal experience.) Based on the answer one can personally judge with more confidence whether the Guru’s actions should be considered fraudulent or not.
