QBism is the most mind-blowing scientific view of reality I’ve ever encountered

What is reality? This is a really important question. Maybe the most important question of all. It’s also a really difficult question to answer. Humans have been attempting this throughout recorded history. And probably long before, extending to the first time one of our prehistoric ancestors looked upon the world and thought something like, What’s this all about?

Most of us, me certainly included, either consciously or unconsciously view reality as being comprised of two main branches: objective and subjective. This was a focus of the first book I wrote, God’s Whisper, Creation’s Thunder, where I attempted to relate principles of ancient mysticism with findings of the new physics.

I shared the schema that I used in the book in a 2012 post called “Does an objective non-symbolic world exist?” The quotes are from a revised version of my book.

First, there’s a subjective and objective reality.

“Is there a reality independent of ourselves? If so, it is objective. Is there a reality that only exists within our own personal consciousness? If so, it is subjective. This produces a distinction between the objective domain of science and the subjective domain of art. A scientific truth exists whether or not any particular individual does, while a work of art springs from a personal rather than universal consciousness.”

Second, there’s a symbolic and non-symbolic reality.

“In human consciousness there are private and public domains. The public part is what can be shared with other people through symbols. The private part is what remains essentially incommunicable, known only to the person experiencing it.… Not everything that is experienced is expressible. Further, there never is an exact correspondence between a symbol and reality. Something always is missing from the description. For example, even though the symbolic language of mathematics is extraordinarily effective in describing the laws of nature, a mathematical description of how nature operates is far removed from the reality of nature itself.”

I argued that this produces four states of being, which I pithily described with the italicized words: (1) subjective and non-symbolic, feeling; (2) subjective and symbolic, thinking; (3) objective and symbolic, observing; (4) objective and non-symbolic, contemplating. The last state of being is by far the most controversial. I still consider it to be a possibility, but I no longer believe in it as strongly as I did when I wrote the book.

I mention this not because my schema is a brilliant bit of philosophizing (it isn’t). I just wanted to show that I’ve been fascinated by the nature of reality for my entire adult life. Initially I believed that the world, and our universe as a whole, is as real as reality can be. Then, in my religious phase, eastern religion variety, I believed that the world is illusory compared to supernatural realms of reality that are far closer to Truth with a capital “T.”

However, in each instance, I assumed that really real reality is something out there, independent of us, waiting to be known by consciousness. This, I believed, is true whether or not ultimate reality is to be found in this physical universe or in some supernatural domain of existence.

Which brings me to a conception of reality described in In Search of Now: The Science of the Present Moment by Jo Marchant, a book that I’ve been blogging about and am enjoying a lot. In a chapter called “Bursts of Creation,” Marchant explores an approach to quantum theory called QBism. She takes quite a few pages to describe it.

These few paragraphs give you the lay of the QBist land. Hopefully you’ll get the gist of what QBism is all about from these passages. Keep in mind that QBism sprang from the minds of sophisticated quantum physicists seeking to understand the meaning of quantum mechanics, not just the mathematics. So these aren’t the ramblings of some New Age type.

Fuchs and his colleagues used mathematical principles inspired by de Finetti to come up with their own interpretation of quantum mechanics. At first, they called the approach ‘Quantum Bayesianism’. But de Finetti’s insistence that probabilities are purely personal is too extreme for most Bayesian mathematicians, so now they just call it QBism (pronounced ‘cubism’). Fuchs hopes that like the art movement, it might help us to see the world in a radically new way.

That’s because unlike any of the other interpretations of quantum mechanics, QBists aren’t just coming up with a new physical structure for the universe: they’re changing the story of what quantum physics is, what it’s about. They argue that we should let go of the idea that wave functions and quantum states relate to anything outside of our own experience.

Rather than being physical states of matter, they are personal: an expression of the experimenter’s own beliefs. A measurement isn’t a dry physical interplay but an agent’s action. The outcome is an experience, what happens to the agent as a result of the action they took.

Instead of proving a picture of the physical world beyond us, Fuchs describes quantum mechanics as a ‘user’s manual’ or ‘guide to experience’. It’s a personal tool rather than an impartial description: a handsaw, not a map. The equations enable a physicist to assign probabilities to the possible consequences of each action she might take, in a self-consistent way.

Let’s say she calculates the quantum state of an electron. In QBism, this doesn’t relate to any actual ‘electron’ already out in the world, it is simply her prediction of what she will experience if she makes a particular measurement. In other words, the equations and relationships of quantum mechanics aren’t revealing a physical terrain of particles, fuzzy or otherwise.

They’re telling us about our personal, internal worlds. They’re expressing the structure of what each of us can experience, believe and know. QBists go much further than the relatively tame idea that our perspective influences how things in the world will look to us. For Fuchs, belief is everything. There’s no solid ground sitting out there beyond all observers, he insists, no universal kernel of realness on which everyone must agree.

Quantum physicists assign probabilities for outcomes between zero and one, where zero means that something definitely won’t happen, and one means it definitely will. Einstein — along with two colleagues, Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen — famously suggested that if you calculate the probability of a particular outcome as ‘one’ or definite, then that phenomenon can be said to have an objective, independent existence. It will be true for everyone, and still true even if there is no one to observe it.

QBists, on the other hand, say that even a probability of one doesn’t guarantee pre-existing reality. Another experimenter with different knowledge or experience might still assign a different probability. A probability of one just means you, personally, are certain, not that the phenomenon is ‘real’.

In one swoop, swathes of what we’re used to thinking of as physical reality — electrons, photons, atoms, the entire microscale that makes up our universe — dissolve away. If we think back to Rovelli’s relational cosmos, these entities were recast as ‘interactions’ that can’t be captured by a single point of view. But within the network of those interactions, there’s still an unarguable truth to what exists, to how things must appear from any particular perspective.

In QBism, though, this landscape is wiped out. Erased. There are no phenomena ‘out there’ at all. Just personal beliefs, inside physicists’ heads. Perhaps you think that sounds ridiculous, but stick with me. There are some practical advantages to this way of seeing the world. And QBists aren’t getting rid of reality — far from it. It just doesn’t look how we thought.

So what is that fresh view of reality QBism brings us? Though this post already is long, I don’t want to leave you without a hint of the answer. I find what follows highly persuasive. Also, inspiring. Philosophically, it seems to be a lot like the love child of Buddhism and Quantum Mechanics.

The physicists are still working out what all this means. But one thing is clear. Although in QBism the predictions of quantum mechanics are personal, the underlying structure is the same for everyone. It tells us how to organise our bets, how we weigh up the consequences of different actions and what to check for to ensure that each moment is consistent with the next.

We’re not dreaming the world, and we can’t conjure just anything with our minds. We’re all part of the same game, playing by the same statistical rules.

Far from getting rid of reality, then, QBists suggest — unlike pretty much all other schools of physics — that reality must consist of more than just physical interactions ticking along. We have to include ourselves because the things we talk about, from photons to planets, have no meaning or existence on their own. In each moment, in everything we observe, we’re bringing something to the table through our choices and experiences.

Fuchs told me that one of his aims for QBism is to flesh out this principle to cover not just conscious human measurements but reality more generally, to develop the idea that ‘whatever it is that we understand as an experience for ourselves, is actually part of the stuff of the world’.

I think that’s an exciting vision for Now because it would mean that we’re not just ‘microphysics configurations’, we’re players. Nothing is set in stone: we have a say in what the universe is and where it goes. When we probe our environment — even something as simple as detecting a photon — we’re not uncovering what’s already there but helping to create something new.

And, in whatever tiny way, that changes the trajectory of reality, of what can come next. ‘If you don’t take the action, you have a different universe than if you do take an action,’ Fuchs told me. ‘And if you do take an action, it depends on which kind of action you take.’

    Enjoyed this post. Very …dense, and in a good way! (Heh, unlike the Zen halfwittery in previous posts, where the “density” consisted only in the convoluted mode of expression of the Zen “sages” doing their best to sound all deep and mysterious when actually saying very simple things!)

    Didn’t fully completely understand all of this very dense post, I’m afraid. But that’s good, that’s great. Chance to learn.

    Okay, two questions about your initial discussion about subjectivity and objectivity, Brian, if I may:

    1. How exactly do you differentiate thinking and contemplation? Can you discuss that difference clearly, maybe with an example or two?

    2. This question about whether there is a reality outside of ourselves. That’s the old brain in a vat formulation. There’s no way, at all, to actually “prove” either a Yes or a No. And what science does is, it simply bypasses that essentially onanistic circle-think by simply going with best-fit models, and positing Occam’s Razor to suggest that the most parsimonious explanation is to go with there actually existing an existing reality outside of ourselves.

    My (second) question is, does your subjectivity-objectivity model, that you referred to above, and your thoughts and ideas about whether there exists a reality outside of our subjectivity: Does it add or clarify anything beyond what I’ve outlined here, in the paragraph above?

    (Very cool, your subjectivity-objectivity model. You needn’t be self-effacing about it, it seems very interesting to me at least, for what that is worth! Just trying to find out a bit more about what it’s about, and more importantly about whether it might help add to our understanding of this age-old question.)

    Thanks for bringing this up! Like with the block universe, I’ve heard of this thing, I’m vaguely aware of it, but I really don’t know much about this creature: and I welcome this chance to find out more!

    (Ehh, I’ve been digging a bit myself, updating myself on the science of the block universe. I’m nowhere close to finishing that “project”: but I think I’ll ditch that for now, and move on to trying to understand QBism a bit better than I actually do now.)

    Meantime, Brian, a question about QBism, if I may. (And it’s perfectly understandable if you shouldn’t know the answer! I’m grateful that you’ve opened up this discussion here on this very interesting subject, for us to learn from.)

    The question is this:

    See, spacetime is science, period. Evolution is science, period. …The block universe, although posited by scientists, isn’t quite science, not in that same way. It is bona fide scientifically grounded, but still, it is no more than a possible interpretation, one among many. …So that, while we’d do well to clearly understand what this bona fide scientific interpretation is about: but we needn’t really get our collective underwear all in a bunch over the block universe, you get what I’m saying?

    In context of this above: What about QBism? Like the multiverse, like string theory, like the six or nine or Gawd knows how many dimensions, and indeed the block universe: Like these, is QBism simply one possible interpretation that is by no means actually science, even while it/they are grounded in bona fide science? So that we’d do well to understand it, but needn’t worry overly much about what it implies, because it isn’t actually a thing yet? Or is it more than that, is it more like spacetime and evolution, and completely merits bunched up underclothes? Of the two, which? Is my question.

    (Like I said, I’ll try to read up a bit about QBism myself, and update myself on this. Meantime, it would be cool if you could clear this up for me! …And again, perfectly understandable, perfectly fine, if you shouldn’t know the answer. It would still be very cool, even so, your introducing this very interesting discussion here.)

  3. Regarding my model of states of being, like I said, I don’t resonate with them nearly as much as I did back in the mid 1990s when I came up with it. At that time I viewed contemplation basically as a form of consciousness in which the knower and the known merge almost completely, as when we’re so absorbed in contemplating something either inside or outside ourself we lose touch with our usual sense of ego, I-ness, self, whatever you want to call it. Sort of like flow, I guess. I still agree with this notion. I just don’t see contemplation as necessarily bringing us closer to reality, though this is possible, depending on how “reality” is defined.

    Regarding whether reality exists objectively outside of us, I used to be more confident of this than I am now. I just can’t visualize how we ever could know reality without our inherent subjectivity of personal consciousness. So every attempt to understand reality passes through our subjectivity, which is an inherent assumption of QBism, one of the reasons this approach to quantum mechanics makes sense to me.

    Concerning QBism, it’s an attempt to go beyond the “shut up and calculate” approach to quantum mechanics that marks the mainstream Copenhagen interpretation. Along with many physicists, I see this as an unnecessary surrender to the mysteries and paradoxes of quantum mechanics. Like the infamous cat who is both alive and dead before a measurement reveals whether a radioactive particle has decayed randomly, causing poison to be released in the box where the cat is.

    As I may share in a future post, QBism resolves this by simply saying that it is a matter of perspective, of personal experience. The cat knows whether it is alive or dead, even if it can’t put this knowledge into words. (Animals are adept at the sort of non-symbolic knowledge I referred to in my states of being schema.) But an observer outside the cat’s box lacks that knowledge, so to them the cat is both alive and dead. Which it really isn’t; it’s just a matter of perspective. QBism resolves other paradoxes of quantum mechanics in a similar fashion, one reason I’m attracted to it.

    For me, there should be a deeper understanding of quantum mechanics than just what the mathematics reveals, which allows technology to proceed without knowing the meaning of the quantum world. That frustrates me, along with many physicists. We want to grasp what reality is, deep down, rather than just being able to manipulate reality to our ends. Of course, they understand the mathematics of quantum mechanics while I don’t, except in a very general sense.

      Right, makes sense. “Contemplation” corresponds with flow, and it translates into a direct apprehension of reality.

      (That is, I understand now where you were going with that. …And I take your point, that that model of yours you’ve long discarded yourself. It doesn’t actually hold, after all, as we’ve seen in the discussion in the last thread: Flow is no more than just a different kind of controlled hallucination, is all.)

      As far as your now doubting whether reality exists outside of us, I’m afraid that doesn’t makes sense to me!

      I mean, the brain in the vat formulation is an old one, so old as to have become a cliche. There’s no way to “prove” that matter, either way. And, like I pointed out, science lets us get outside of that circle of endless philosophical onanism by going with best-fit models, and shaving off less than parsimonious solipsism by brandishing the trusty razor of Occam.

      Surely that puts the question to rest? At least until we find actual evidence that would make us change our mind on that?

      And nor does QBism give us any reason to jettison this commonsense approach, is how I see this. Here’s why:

      I actually had very little actual idea, starting out, about QBism. So I spent some time updating myself on this. And I think I now have a fair grasp of what is QBism, and also what it is not.

      It’s not that QBism is the only interpretation of QM, and it isn’t as if the choice is between either “shut up and calculate” or go with QBism. Far from it.

      The fact is there’s a whole plethora of separate interpretations for QM, each of them fascinating in their own right. We’ve all heard of the Many-World interpretation: but there’s many others.

      And QBism is just one of a whole bunch of interpretations. And nor is it one of the mainstream ones, with no reason why we should favor it over one of the many others.

      Going back to the specific question that I’d asked you about QBism: Basis what I read up since, the answer would appear to be an emphatic No! …No, QBism is not established science, not in the same way that evolution and spacetime are established science: and there’s no reason at all for us to upend our worldview to fit in QBism.

      To be clear: QBism is bona fide science, it is something bona fide scientists are working on, and it does agree with all QM observations. But it is only one interpretation of QM observations among many others, and a fringe one at that. And nor does it offer any new evidence, or even any new predictions.

      So, to circle back to what I’d been asking, and to now supply the answer to it as well: No, QBism is NOT like evolution and spacetime, at least not so far. It is good to know about, sure. It is fascinating, wondrous even, sure, in terms of what all it points towards. But we need do nothing more than just learn about it, and file it away, and if we’re interested follow developments in that field.

      It isn’t actually established science, and we needn’t worry about incorporating it in our larger worldview. Not for now, at any rate.

      So no, I don’t see that it gives us any fresh reason to doubt the existence of an external reality, sorry!

    All very interesting, but for the mind ! And reality is more than the mind (see ! I’m using the mind again, can we escape it ?) Pretending we can is just more food for the mind. Ultimately everything is very simple, very simple. Keep the mind out of it ! But (again) we find this impossible.
    Right ! Here’s an attempt:
    Food keeps us alive. We do not have to believe it does, nor cogitate on it for decades.
    Just eat and watch.
    Don’t eat and watch (yourself die).

    The mind is such an interesting kaleidoscope that it sets puzzles and quandaries and we, trapped by it are lured into the trap of trying to solve it.
    But actually that quandary cannot be solved.
    And in about a thousand years we would still be trying to solve it.

    But quantum discoveries lead to fantastic discoveries which improve our world. Really ? How do we know we are happier than cavemen ?
    (Better beds, but sleep quality? Warmth but less resilience… etc)

    Sawan Singh in Spiritual Gems says in those higher regions: speaking without tongue, listening without ears, seeing without eyes.
    But all that higher region stuff may prompt another in-depth.
    And WB Yeats in ‘The song of the Happy Shepherd’ : Words alone are certain good’
    So what’s the relationship between ideas, concepts, thoughts and the words we use to try to identify those ideas etc.?
    And then bring in all the different languages in the world and…. and… where do we go from here ?
